SCRIPTURE

Jeremiah 2:13

“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”

 DEVOTIONAL

God names the problem clearly: we are thirsty not because He has withheld water, but because we have turned away from the source.

In Jeremiah 2, the Lord describes His people abandoning Him, the fountain of living waters and instead digging their own cisterns. Man-made systems meant to hold life, but cracked, leaking, and unable to satisfy. What was built to sustain ends up empty.

Broken cisterns still take effort. They require digging, maintaining, and trusting in what we can control. But they never truly fill us. Today’s fast invites us to recognize where we’ve substituted the Living Water for habits, ambition, comfort, or self-reliance and to return to the source.

God does not shame us for our thirst. He calls us back to Himself.

PRAYER

by Thay, Pastor + Co-Founder of Pray The Bay

“Lord, we come before You humbled and aware.

We confess that we have often forsaken You, the spring of Living Water and turned to what cannot satisfy.

We have dug our own cisterns: systems, habits, ambition, and comforts, trusting in what we can build rather than You. And they have left us empty.

Forgive us, God. Turn our hearts back to the source.

Restore in us a holy thirst for Your presence. Teach us again to drink deeply from You alone.

Break every false dependence. Heal what is cracked and leaking in our souls.

Lead us back to the Living Water that never runs dry. We choose You, Lord. We return to You.

Be our source, our life, our satisfaction.

In Jesus’ name, amen.”

REFLECTION + INVITATION

Today, take an honest look at where you’ve been drinking from.

Ask God:

  • What have I been turning to instead of You?

  • What “cisterns” have promised satisfaction but left me empty?

  • What would it look like to return fully to You as my source?

Broken cisterns will always leave us thirsty.

The fountain of Living Water is still open.

Return to the source.
