SCRIPTURE
Isaiah 29:13
“And the Lord said: ‘Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me…”
DEVOTIONAL
It is possible to be close to God in language, yet distant in love.
In Isaiah 29, God exposes a subtle form of dryness, one that hides behind words, routines, and religious activity. The people honor Him outwardly, but their hearts remain untouched. Their devotion sounds right, yet it no longer flows from intimacy.
This kind of distance often goes unnoticed because it looks spiritual. We show up, say the right things, keep the habits, but somewhere along the way, affection fades and hunger dulls.
Today’s fast invites us to let God search us. Not for performance, but for presence. Not for routine, but for real relationship. Jesus is not interested in our words alone… He desires our hearts.
PRAYER
by Allen the Director of Dwelling Place Prayer Discipleship School
“Father, today we let this word search us.
We don’t want closeness in words if our hearts are distant. We don’t want outward devotion without inward affection. We don’t want activity that looks spiritual but leaves us unchanged.
Jesus, You are the Living Water.
We don’t want to just talk about You, we want to know You.
Bring our hearts back to You.
Where we have grown comfortable, make us tender again. Where we have settled for habit instead of hunger, awaken desire.
We choose nearness. We choose honesty. We choose You.
Come and satisfy us again.
In Jesus’ name, amen.”
REFLECTION + INVITATION
Today, pause and let God search your heart.
Ask Him:
Where have I replaced intimacy with routine?
Where do my words say “near,” but my heart feels far?
What would it look like to return to genuine affection for You?
God is not after appearances.
He is after closeness.
Come near with your whole heart.
